First Road Trip

WE DID IT!!!

Mom and Dad (Bill's folks) gave us permission to take their 36' motor home out camping while they are in Arizona. Bill and I agreed that our first trip should be a relatively close one. So we decided to head to Portage Glacier, about 50 miles South of Anchorage, to test drive the motor home and become more familiar with it before going on a longer trip.

Bill did an excellent job in driving and keeping us all safe. Driving a house on wheels is not the easiest thing to do, but he managed to do an awesome job despite the high winds on the Turnagain Arm.

We also ran into some technical difficulties with the motor home itself. But thankfully we had lots of help from neighboring campers with similar set ups who were able to give us tips to solve our battery complications. We are just thankful we know about them now.

Several playgroup couples were able to join us at the Williwaw Campground at Portage Glacier. Everyone had fun riding bikes, going for walks, digging in the dirt, collecting rocks, splashing in puddles, blowing bubbles and more.

One of the highlights of the trip was attending "Kids Fishing Day" held at Moose Flats, just a mile up the road. There, Fish and Game and the Forestry Department were putting on demonstrations to teach young kids about fishing and to also raise awareness regarding forest fires. In fact, Smokey the Bear made a special appearance. All the parents had obviously talked to their kids about staying away from wildlife (moose and bears particularly - no kidding); since none of the kids wanted anything to do with Smokey. So I asked Sara, why she did not want to meet Smokey. She replies, "Mama - he's a bear; I'm suppose to stay away from bears....right?". I about died laughing. What a good point she made. After explaining that Smokey was o.k. and also getting the o.k. from the Fish and Game and Forestry folks, Sara then met Smokey and got a great big Bear hug and also a neat pin to take home.
